Just like any other parents, Carol Fenner and her husband were so excited when they realized they were going to be parents. The ultrasounds Carol had during her pregnancy showed everything normal, and yet when baby Luna Tavares-Fenner was welcomed into the world, her parents were stunned.

Luna’s face was covered in a huge birthmark that resembled Batman’s mask. During the first week of Luna’s life, they had no idea how serious her condition was. After a series of tests, it was determined that Luna has a very rare skin condition called a congenital melanocytic nevus, which was something that was to be taken care of since it would have increased her chances of having skin can-cer in the future.

The family was advised to get Luna that much-needed treatment that included several sur-geries, at least six. Each of the sur-geries cost about $40,000, and the family couldn’t afford it. Carol and her husband, who live in Florida, took Luna to multiple doctors across New York, Chicago, Boston. They wanted Luna to get those sur-geries before she started going to school.
Carol never hid her daughter from the world. She often posted several photos of Luna on Instagram to raise awareness. This decision turned out to be the best she could ever make because her profile caught the attention of surgeon-oncologist Dr. Panvel Borisovich Popov from Russia.

He offered a sur-gery that was not available in the United States, and so Carol decided to meet him in person. The cost would be $70,000, and Carol and her husband were able to raise the money with the help of many kindhearted people from all over the country.
During the last two years, the family went to Russia numerous times amidst the ongoing COVID 19 whenever they were asked to. In a conversation with East2West News, Dr. Popov said that Luna has already started talking and calls herself a princess. He also added that the medical part is done, and now they are working on the aesthetic sur-geries.

Recently, Carol shared a picture of her daughter after all the procedures, and the girl looked happy. Carol said that Luna dances a few hours after the sur-gery.
Recently, Luna travelled to Brazil to spend Christmas with her mom’s family, as Carol is originally from there. However, after Christmas Luna will have to go to Russia again to receive more treatments.
